California Wedding Photography at Berkeley City Club

Courtney and Matt’s Wuthering Heights-inspired wedding at Berkeley City Club was full of dark, romantic details, layered textures, incredible color, and the kind of maximalist design that feels completely at home in a historic California venue. But more than anything, this was a wedding centered around their people.

Their friends and family brought so much personality to the day, and that made it especially meaningful to photograph. There were beautiful details everywhere, but the moments between people were what kept pulling me in: the hugs, the laughter, the ridiculous moments, the quiet ones, and all of the little interactions that made the day feel entirely theirs.

It was also a wedding that gave me plenty of room to photograph creatively. Berkeley City Club has no shortage of character, from its Moorish-inspired architecture and dramatic interiors to the courtyard, gardens, pool, and intimate spaces tucked throughout the building. Combined with Courtney and Matt’s vision, the result felt romantic, colorful, a little unexpected, and completely personal.

A Maximalist Wedding at Berkeley City Club

Courtney and Matt leaned fully into the character of Berkeley City Club rather than trying to make the space feel like something it wasn’t. Green velvet linens, colorful floral arrangements, candlelight, vintage-inspired details, and an eclectic mix of fashion made the reception feel layered without losing the warmth of the room.

I especially loved how much color was carried throughout the day. The flowers weren’t simply there as decoration. They became part of the atmosphere, set against deep green tables, warm wood, patterned rugs, arched windows, and the incredible architecture of the club.

The result was maximalism that still felt lived-in. Nothing felt too precious to touch, photograph, or enjoy.

And then there were the people.

A Wedding That Was Really About the People

Some weddings are defined by the details. Others are defined by what happens when everyone you love is finally in the same room.

Courtney and Matt’s wedding was very much the latter.

From getting ready in the morning to dinner and the dance floor later that night, their friends and family were constantly part of the story. There were people laughing in hallways, gathering around tables, playing games, pulling each other onto the dance floor, sneaking away for photographs, and generally making the entire day feel alive.

That is the kind of wedding photography I am most drawn to. I want the photographs to show what the day actually felt like to be there, not just what everything looked like.

The formal portraits matter. The dress matters. The flowers matter. The architecture matters.

But years from now, I think the photographs that become the most important are often the ones where you can immediately remember who was there and how it felt to have them around you.

Photographing the Day on Film

There was something particularly fitting about photographing this wedding primarily on film.

Film has a way of slowing me down and encouraging me to pay attention to the entire frame. The architecture, the light, the clothes, the flowers, the expressions, the person standing just outside the center of the photograph. All of it becomes part of the image.

For a wedding with this much visual character, I wanted the photographs to feel just as layered as the day itself. Some frames are quiet and composed. Others are messy, spontaneous, and full of movement. There are black-and-white portraits, saturated color, flash photographs from the reception, and images that simply happened because I was paying attention at the right moment.

That mix is what makes a wedding gallery feel like a record of a day rather than a collection of highlights.

One of my favorite things about this wedding was how naturally the day moved between different moods.

The quiet of getting ready.

The anticipation before the ceremony.

The reflection of the couple in the pool.

A beautifully dressed room filled with friends and family.

Dinner, speeches, drinks, games, cake, and eventually a packed dance floor.

Nothing felt overly staged. There was plenty of intention behind the day, but there was also plenty of room for things to unfold.

And that is where the photographs really came alive.
